My dear Sir,

I can feel no hesitation in adding my testimony to that which I know all who were acquainted with you and your labours at Hong Kong would most cheerfully give. As was, I believe always the case in such time, there was a great deficiency in clerical services when the Governor requested me to allow you to act as Colonial Chaplain so I consented, and believing it to be the rule of Colony that any person taking the place temporarily, I therefore received one half the salary.
